Feng Shui 101: The Basics of Feng Shui That Everyone Needs To Know

Have you always wondered why Feng Shui believers always insist on placing their furniture on a certain location? Maybe you have wondered what sort of impact it brings?

If it’s something that sparks your interest, this article will help you understand the basics of Feng Shui and how it really works.

  1.     A Quick History on Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient method founded in China that believes that the construction or design of your home nor business place can help determine your happiness, abundance and harmony. It stems from the respect that Chinese people had for their environment, believing that cosmological influences can bring a large effect in our lives.

Feng Shui splits the world into five different elements:

  • Wood as creativity and growth;
  • Fire as leadership and boldness;
  • Earth as strength and stability;
  • Metal as focus and order, and;
  • Water as emotion and inspiration.

By balancing these five elements in your home, it is believed that your life will thrive and be well-balanced.

  1.     The Next Step: Practicing Feng Shui in Your Home

If you’re ready to implement Feng Shui in your home, start with your front door first. Research has shown that people believe that the front door acts as a portal for energy to flow through your home, making it important that it is the first place to start with.

Start with decluttering and cleaning the front entry area. Then, make sure that your front entry has a lot of lighting. This creates a place for energy to enter your home and gather! In Feng Shui, decluttering is more about creating space than simply tidying up. It symbolizes that you are making space in your life for more opportunities.

The second step in Feng Shui is to make sure that your house is squeaky clean, especially your windows. In Ancient Chinese, windows symbolize the eyes of adults and voices of children. As clean windows let in more sunlight which in turn energizes us, clean windows will metaphorically lead us to see the world in more colours.

The third step in Feng Shui is furniture placement. In Feng Shui, one of the most important principles is the commanding position. In any room, the commanding position is the position that is located furthest from the door and is not directly in line with it. It is believed that this governs how you position yourself in life. Thus, make sure to apply this belief to the location of your desk which represents your career, the stove which represents your wealth, and also the bed which represents you.

  1.     Take Feng Shui to The Next Level

If Feng Shui fascinates you and you want to implement even more of it in your life, there are certain things called Feng Shui cures- which are adjustments, enhancements or remedies that can help remediate the flow of energy in your home. However, the key here is to not make your home look ‘Feng Shui’ed’, instead it should complement those living in the home and make it a better place to live in.

For instance, aquariums are a popular choice in Feng Shui. By placing an aquarium, or any sort of water features in your home it can help activate and harness the ‘chi’. Adding plants is also common as it contains elements of ‘wood’ and ‘earth’ that aid your health and cure areas that can negatively impact your finances.

As Feng Shui is a very broad topic, of course there will still be more stuff about Feng Shui that is not covered in this article. Should you wish to Feng Shui your home even more, feel free to look up more articles or even consider getting a Feng Shui expert to inspect your home.
